General Information About Gozo.

Location

Gozo forms part of the Maltese islands situated in the middle of Mediterranean sea, about 60 miles south of Sicily. It is rougly 1/3 in size of the main island, Malta.

Gozo has been frequently described as "The island where time stood still..." It is very tranquil when compared to Malta and prices are still on the cheaper side.However it offers more than the traditional sea and sun, and depending on which time of the year ones comes , the activities one can engage in are various

Accessibility

The International Airport (Luqa) is situated on the main island of Malta. Gozo can be reached either by a ferry boat that runs regular all year round with night time trips.Helicopter service has been discontinued.

There is a direct bus shuttle service between Luqa international airport and the Cirkewwa ferry terminal. Getting Around in Gozo.

Once in Gozo there are buses from the Mgarr ferry to Victoira. Victoria is the capital and situated in the centre. All the buses leave from Victoira to the villages and get back there. Gozo buses TimetableBuses do not operate druing the night.

Weather

Gozo has a typical mediterreanean weather characterized by hot dry sumers and mild wet winters. The hottest months are July and August , with temperatures in the upper 80's (20's celcuis),and occasionally 90's/ (30's celcuis) Night time temperatures during this period will drop in the lower 70's (20 celcuis). The tourism influx is highest druing this period as the sea temperaute is at it's warmest, with practically no rain. The coldest months of the year are January and February with temperatures in the 50/60's ( 10/16 celcius) Night time temperatures at this time range in the 40/50's (5/10 celcuis) The wet season genarally lasts from October through March, while the rest of the year is very dry. Must See Attractions

Although by no way exhaustive these are the island's top attractions and are worth a visit.

The Citadel: This is the main attraction of Victoira ( the capital) . Built on a rocky hill, the first fortifications date backl from the 1500BC.Further improved by the Phoenitians and later by the Romans. The later impressive fortifications were re built by the Knights of St John from 1599 onwards. The views from the ramparts are magnificent as they overlook Victoria and Malta A ticket of around Eur4.66, will grant the visitor enrtance to the Archeology Museum , the Folklore Museum, natural Science Musuema and Old Prisions.

The Azure Window: This is a natural arch created by erosion of waves and rough sea over thousands of years. A huge ledge of rock rests on two giant columns, forming part of a giant window overlooking the deep blue sea. This site is home to the Inland Sea and Fungus rock, and it can be described as the best diving site on the island. Recently The Maltese Islands have been ranked as 3rd best world diving Destination,preceeded by Egypt and the Maldives.

Ggantija Temples: This prehistoric temple dates back to the Neolithic age and is the oldest free standing structure in the World. You can click Ggantija Temple Info

Ramla Bay : This is Gozo's best beach, located in a fertile valley on the north side of the island. It is situated between two of the biggest villages Xaghara and Nadur. It s quiet wide, sandy and has a particular reddish sand which makes it stand out from other beaches

Comino : Situated just 10 mins ferry boat from the Gozo Ferry terminal, this little island is a heaven for snorkelling , swimming and sunbathing in the surreal blue lagoon.
